Hello NHS parents and students!

Hopefully you all had an enjoyable summer and an opportunity to experience a bit of rest and relaxation. As we say good-bye to summer and students prepare to head “Back to School” next week, the following information is provided to ensure a smooth transition into the new school year. We look forward to seeing you soon!

First Day of School

Grade 9:  Wednesday, September 7

This day is a welcome and orientation day for our grade 9 students only. The school day starts at 9:00 and students will be welcomed and given directions upon their arrival. Our Parent Advisory Council (PAC) will be providing a hotdog lunch for all students and staff. The regular class schedule will begin on Thursday. An opportunity for parents to meet the teachers will happen the following week.

Grade 10-12:  Thursday, September 8

The school day starts at 9:00. Students will receive a printed copy of their schedule upon arrival and will proceed directly to their period 1 class. This is a regular school day for all grade 9-12 students.

Student Schedules

Course selections can be viewed through the parent portal. A printed copy of their schedule will be provided when they arrive on their first day of school. Please note that we run a Monday-Friday schedule.

Grade 9 and 10 students will be participating in LIFE Groups again this year, which will take place each Wednesday morning from 9:00-10:00. This is a ½ credit course that will focus on Career Development (grade 9) and Social/Emotional Well-Being (grade 10). It will be identified as Reading is Thinking on the student’s schedule (this is in addition to the full RIT credit that some students have chosen). A variety of optional sessions and workshops will be offered to our grade 11 and 12 students during this time slot over the course of the year, otherwise it will be a spare for those students.

If students feel that there is an error in their course list, or a specific class is missing, our school counsellor, Deanna Wiebe, will be available on Aug 31 and Sept 1 and 2 for those inquiries. She can be reached at 204-388-9761 or dwiebe@hsd.ca to make an appointment. Please note that changes to student schedules will be accommodated based on credit requirements and where availability and class size allow. All student schedules will need to be finalized by Friday, Sept. 9.

Hot Lunch

There are two hot lunch options each week that are sold out of the school canteen. This will start up again on September 13.

Tuesdays – meat buns (3 for $2)

Thursdays – pizza ($2.50/slice)

Chromebooks

Grade 9 students will be issued a chromebook on the first day of school. This is theirs to use for the next four years. Chromebook user agreements will need to be completed by parents on the parent portal.

Returning students should have their chromebooks charged and with them on the first day of school.

School Fees

School fees will be charged to student accounts in the first two weeks of school, aside from Chromebook Insurance that HSD will apply at the end of September. We kindly ask that these fees be paid by the end of October. Sports fees will be added at the beginning of each season and will need to be paid before play commences. Payments can be made on the Parent Portal or by cash and cheque at the school office.

Lockers

Each student will be assigned a locker and issued a school lock with combination. They will receive this information on the first day of school. Personal locks are not to be used.

Picture Day – Friday, September 9

All students will have their annual school photo taken on this day. Students are not required to purchase any photos but it is important that all students have their picture taken for our school records and yearbook.

Meet the Teacher – Thursday, September 15

NHS parents will have an opportunity to “Meet the Teachers” on September 15 from 6:00-8:00. This will be a come-and-go event for a quick visit to say “hi” and introduce yourselves. No appointments needed.

School Volunteers and Coaches

Criminal Record Checks and Child Abuse Registry Checks are required by all volunteers and coaches prior to any involvement and contact with students. These checks are valid for 5 years but all volunteers will need to complete the HSD Annual Declaration.

Respect in Sport certificates are also required by all coaches before they begin coaching. Stay tuned for more information from the phys ed department.

Student Records Update and Permissions Required

Please review and update your student’s information on the parent portal. There are also a number of permissions that need to be completed such as Walking Permission, Responsible Use of Technology, and Chromebook User Agreement. Please call the school if you require assistance.
