As we welcome the arrival of March, I am reminded that Daylight Saving Time begins this weekend, meaning we “spring ahead” and set our clocks forward by one hour. Losing that hour of sleep always throws me for a loop, but the extra daylight in the evening is definitely a treat.
The month of February brought with it the first “Winter Activity Day” at NHS and it was a hit! The weather was a bit of a complicating factor in some of the outdoor planning but staff and students reported that they had a lot of fun! Thanks to our student leadership team and all the teachers for planning and implementing such a fantastic day. The students are already talking about next year!
Important note!
We have had an increase in the number of students hanging out in the bathrooms again. This creates an unsafe and uncomfortable environment for those students who actually want to use the bathroom for its intended purpose. There has also been an increase in vandalism in the bathrooms. Reminders and announcements are being made and we also encourage students to let us know when there are groups of people in the bathroom. Teachers have been instructed to allow only one student at a time to leave class to use the bathroom. Students who are found hanging out in the bathroom (ie. visiting, putting on makeup, texting, etc.) will spend some time working in the office. Parents will also be notified for their awareness. Students vaping in the bathroom will receive a three day in-school suspension. Thank you for your attention to this as we try to make our school a safe place for everyone.
Here are a few upcoming things to take note of this month . . .
NHS Pancake Breakfast – Parent Volunteers and Griddles Needed
Our 2nd Annual Pancake Breakfast is taking place on Friday, March 22 and we need your help! Our Student Leadership Team is hosting the event but is looking to borrow 10 pancake griddles. They also need a few parent volunteers to help cook pancakes that morning starting at 8:00 AM. Please contact the school at nhs@hsd.ca by Friday, March 15 if you are able to provide a griddle or would like to help with flipping pancakes. Griddles can be dropped off at the school office between 9:00 and 4:00 anytime before March 22. Thanks in advance for your support!
Interim Progress Reports – March 11
In an effort to keep parents updated on their student’s academic progress, interim progress reports will again be sent home this month. Progress reports will be sent out for those students who are struggling to demonstrate their learning, are showing limited progress, or in cases where the course credit may be in jeopardy if the current rate of progress continues. These reports will be course specific and parents will receive communication directly from the teacher on March 11. Students demonstrating basic, good, very good, or excellent progress will not receive an interim report but parents may contact teachers at any point to check on their child’s progress. The NHS Assessment Rubric is attached for your reference. Report cards will be issued again for all students on April 22.
Brandon Jazz Festival – March 14 & 15
Our jazz band is off to Brandon next weekend and we wish them all the best. This is an exciting opportunity to perform and showcase the learning they’ve done this year. Good luck!
Staffing Update
Just a reminder that our school counsellor, Deanna Wiebe, is on leave until spring break. Please contact the school at nhs@hsd.ca if you have any concerns or your student is in need of support.
Also, we welcome Melissa Wiebe back later this month and look forward to working with her again. We thank Larry Klassen for filling in for the past several weeks.
Friday, March 8: HSD Admin/PD Day – No classes for students
