As we step into semester two, we want to extend our best wishes and congratulations to all our students and staff for a successful and fulfilling first half of the school year and now the official start to our 2nd Semester!
This marks an especially significant time for our Grade 12 students—their final semester at NHS. Graduation conversations will become more frequent, and with that comes excitement, reflection, and anticipation for the future.
To our grads (and all other students): These last five months are an opportunity to embrace every moment of learning, growth, and connection. Think about the legacy you want to leave behind—the impact you have on your peers, your school, and your community. Make the most of every class, every challenge, and every opportunity to lead and inspire.
Let’s continue to support each other, celebrate our successes, and finish this year strong—together!
Cell Phone Policy Reminder
Thank you for your continued support following this policy, it has truly impacted the collective culture of our building in a positive manner.
Cellphone Use in Grades 9 to 12:
- Class Time: Students in grades 9 to 12 are not permitted to use cellphones during class time. Cellphones must be stored in a designated area (e.g., backpacks, lockers, or teacher designated classroom storage) and kept on silent mode. A reminder, students are not allowed to have cellphones in any washroom.
- Breaks and Lunch: Students are permitted to use their cellphones during breaks and lunch periods. A washroom break while in class does not constitute as a break. Students using their cellphones in the halls or bathrooms will have the same consequences as students using cellphones in the classroom. Students are encouraged to engage with their peers and participate in school activities during these times.
Policy Enforcement: Students found using their cellphones in violation of this policy will be subject to the following consequences:
- First Offense: Verbal warning and confiscation (turned into the office) of the cellphone until the end of the school day.
- Second Offense: Confiscation of the cellphone (turned into the office), parent/guardian notification, and the cellphone returned only to a parent/guardian.
- Third Offense: Confiscation, parent/guardian meeting, and potential loss of cellphone privileges during school hours for a specified period.
Please see our full policy attached to this email and/or on our website at nhs.hsd.ca (under students)
Report Cards – February 7
Report cards will be issued on Friday, February 7 and will be available through the parent portal. Please feel free to reach out to teachers if you have any questions or wish to discuss your student’s progress in more detail. Teacher email addresses are available on the school website.
Punctuality and Attendance Matters
Please be reminded that if a student is not in class when attendance is taken, they will be marked absent. Students arriving late need to sign in at the office and get a late slip to have their absence corrected to a late. A late arrival is considered 3-5 minutes after the designated start time.
If a student arrives more than halfway through the class, even with a late slip, they will be marked absent. If the tardiness is due to an appointment or excused absence, please notify the school by phone, email, or through the parent portal.
We will be more diligent in tracking late arrivals, especially those arriving 10 minutes or more past the start time and will reach out to parents as necessary.
As part of our commitment to student success and adherence to Manitoba Education’s attendance policy, we want to ensure consistency in parent communication regarding student absences.
- Day 3: Teachers make initial contact with parents/guardians.
- Day 6: Teachers follow up with parents/guardians regarding continued absences.
- Day 9: Teachers make a final contact before administrative intervention.
- Day 5 & 10: Administration will reach out to parents/guardians regarding attendance concerns. On day 10 of absences, a student specific meeting to support attendance will be initiated.
Thank you for your attention to this policy and for your continued efforts in supporting student attendance.
