I would like to wish our students and teachers all the best as we kick off semester two and enter into the second half of the school year. This is the final semester of high school for our grade 12’s and the conversations about grad are becoming more frequent. I encourage all our graduating students to embrace these last five months of learning and growing together at NHS.

Here are a few things to take note of this month . . .

Staffing Update

We said goodbye to Sheldon Hiebert at the end of January and wish him all the best in his new teaching adventures. We welcome Larry Klassen who will be taking over Sheldon’s courses for the next 6 weeks, and then Melissa Wiebe will be returning from her maternity leave and completing the remainder of the year. We also welcomed Kayla Palfi in January and she will be taking over a number of humanities courses this semester.

Cell Phone Reminder

As students start new classes this week, we remain dedicated to removing the distraction of cell phones in the classroom. This is very difficult for some students and we are still needing to provide many reminders. Leaving the classroom for a phone break under the guise of going to the bathroom is an ongoing problem which we will be trying to clamp down on. I encourage families to have conversations about responsible use of technology and remind students that cell phones must be stowed away in lockers or backpacks during class time.

Report Cards – Feb 9

Report cards will be issued on Friday, Feb 9 and will be available through the parent portal. Please feel free to reach out to teachers if you have any questions or wish to discuss your student’s progress in more detail. Teacher email addresses are available on the school website.

Grade 9 PBL Showcase of Learning – Feb 15

Our grade 9 interdisciplinary classes will be sharing their learning from their most recent project on human rights. Feel free to drop in between 6:00 and 7:30 and talk to the students about what they’ve learned!

Grade 10 Reality Check Event – Feb 21

Reality Check is a budgeting simulation for grade 10 students. It is a chance to practice budgeting and experience its various aspects in a no-risk environment. NHS will be hosting this event for our own students, along with grade 10 students from Landmark and Grunthal. The event will be held during the regular school day.

University Open House – Feb 21 & 22

Grade 11 & 12 students interested in Red River College and/or University of Manitoba are invited to attend the open houses in February. Students can sign up with Mrs. Wiebe and also get more details about the event. Deadline for signing up is Monday, Feb. 12th. Permission forms will be posted on the parent portal.
